A magnificent long-nose putter in totally original condition showing the makers name stamped to the crown with a Masonic symbol shown beneath. The length of the putter is 34” (86cm).

George Brews was the professional-club maker at Royal Blackheath from 1890 to 1902. He was an original member of the PGA. Royal Blackheath is the oldest golf club formed outside of Scotland, official records show the date as 1766 although earlier dates have been put forward such as 1608 when it is said that Prince Henry, son of James 1 (James V1 Scotland) played golf in Greenwich. George Brews also made Samuel Ryder’s first putter.

The head measures 5.25” (13cm) from toe to heel through the centre of the face, nearly 2” (5cm) wide across the crown and just over 1” (2.50cm) deep face including the rams horn sole insert.

The sole insert is held firmly in place by three wooden plugs and the long back lead weight (nearly 3.75” / 9.50cm) is securely in position. The face lines have been lightly re cut.

The dark brown (mahogany colour) stained shaft is straight and retains the original full length hide grip over underlisting. As the images show the grip is worn, especially at the bottom end and there has also been some repair work carried out at some stage to the first 1” (2.50cm at the top end.
