A very nice example of an early steel shafted putter by A. Tooley & Sons who were a well known hickory club maker based in London from the early 1900’s. The club measures 35.50” (90cm).

The club has been restored to play condition but would also make a fine addition to a golf club collectors portfolio. The crown of the head is clearly stamped with the makers name and address and the sole shows the model name ‘BEATEL’, Special Iron, Patent No. 772550. His ‘Forest Brand’ cleekmark is stamped to the face. The mark is three trees which he designed having formerly been the professional-club maker at the Honor Oak & Forest Hill Golf Club from 1904 to 1909.

The face has approximately 20 degrees of loft so this chipper can be used to propel the ball on to the green from quite a distance. Presumably the patent design is the sole which has a front lip about ¼” deep running the length of the front edge before sloping to a wide arched flange measuring 1” (2.50cm) at the widest point. The head measures 3.50” (9cm) from toe to heel along the centre of the sole. The hosel measures just over 3.50” (9cm).

The head has been cleaned, polished and the front leading edge has been re cut to remove old dint marks. The face is stamped with a line-scored pattern with the makers cleekmark in the centre.

The straight dark grey/black metal shaft retains the original black leather grip tightly bound with new black waxed linen whipping thread. The top of the shaft is wood fitted into the metal so that the top section of the leather grip could be pinned in the same way as when fitting a grip to a hickory shaft.
